Mayor G. William "Bill" Curtis

The Mayor of Mount Vernon is G.William “Bill” Curtis. Bill is currently serving his first term as Mayor. Bill also served on the Mount Vernon City Council for 9 ½  years.

Bill is a native of Mount Vernon, who after obtaining a Masters Degree from Purdue returned home to work with youth. He worked with the schools, courts,  Dept. of Child Services and mental health center.  In all these endeavors he utilized a creative problem solving approach, emphasizing fact finding, exploring alternatives, and maintaining an open mind until a decision is reached.  He will continue to use this approach in dealing with current and future challenges and opportunities for community growth and development.   Bill wants to ensure and improve the quality of life for the residents by balancing residential, business & environmental interest in a fiscally responsible manner.

We have a lot to be proud of here in Mount Vernon. We have completed the Riverfront Revitalization making this a destination to meet friends and enjoy family activities.  The Ohio River has been a focal point in our community since the McFadin family settled here in 1806.  The second weekend in September Mount Vernon celebrates their heritage with the” River Days Festival”.  The City has obtained an INDOT Award to build a “Walking/Bicycle Trail” thru the city.  The trail will begin at the riverfront and travel Main Street to 6th Street and end at Brittlebank Park.  Letting for this project will be fall of 2017.

Mount Vernon is proud of our schools and feels their major key for success is parent and student involvement. Not only do their students excel in the classroom, the schools  provides many  extra-curricular activities for the students to participate in.

Mount Vernon has a wide diversity of businesses, including agribusinesses, pharmaceutical, plastic and petroleum. It  is home to the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon which is a 1000-acre facility with 11 tenants.  This port is the eighth largest inland port in the country.  We also are surrounded by many other major industries……………Sabic IP, Astra Zeneca, Babcock & Wilcox, GAF, CountryMark and ADM Milling just to name a few.  Mid-West Fertilizer is breaking ground in the fall of 2016 to build a plant just outside of Mount Vernon.
