General Flushing Information:
Hydrant flushing is normally conducted throughout the system to control the buildup of rust deposits inside the water mains. A Water Department should flush twice per year, in the early spring and late fall. Flushing notices will be placed in the Democrat and on our website. In addition, door hangers will distributed throughout the affected areas, advising residents that they may experience loss of water, low pressure and discolored water during flushing periods. It is important to check for rusty, discolored water before washing clothes. Limiting water use during this period will minimize intake of undesirable water. For safety and quality control issues flushing will most likely be in the daytime hours. Mt. Vernon Water Department personnel are aware of the inconvenience and we will do everything possible to assist customers during this trying period.
Flushing water mains may cause iron and manganese sediment to become more visible. Your water may at times appear yellow to dark brown in color (the actual minerals lifting in the water) and may also appear milky at times (air bubbles caused by the opening of the water mains). These non-health threatening minerals are known to cause staining. Be a wary consumer, to minimize the effect of these naturally occurring minerals, avoid using and / or purchasing products that contain chlorine (including automatic dishwashing detergents, laundry detergents, and any other household cleaning agents). Run a bit of COLD water into a light-colored cup before using any appliances or your toilet. Flushing also has an affect on water pressure. When in the area or your home, you may experience a reduction in the pressure coming into your home. That is because of the high pressure that is being drawn at the hydrants at the times of flushing.
Times for flushing vary due to staffing and weather conditions. The Mount Vernon Water Department needs to flush during the daytime in order to monitor the impact of our ReOx treatment program and to monitor the composition of the scale that will be forced out of the mains.
Note: When flushing mains, even if we are not directly ON your street, the connecting streets in that area COULD experience some, all, or none of the same effects as that of the actual street being flushed. Because of this potential we supply the full listing of possibilities. Please be aware of our flushing signs that are posted in the flushing areas.
For more questions regarding the flushing program and a map of the affected areas, please refer to the News and Notices at the middle right of this page.
