City of Mount Vernon, Indiana

By law all trash must be in containers.  We would prefer that your garbage be in plastic bags stored inside lightweight plastic trashcans.  Steel drums are discouraged, as they are too heavy to lift safely.  Containers are not to exceed 55 gallons.  The Sanitation will pick up trash that is generated as normal household waste.

The city will not pickup:

• Human and animal body wastes either solid or liquid.
• Dead animals
• Hazardous or toxic waste
• Liquids of any kind
• Contractor materials
• Automotive or vehicle parts
• Yard waste, including grass and leaves
• Tires, unless cut into quarters
