Welcome Statement

The citizens of Mt. Vernon say "Welcome back" to friends and "Welcome" to visitors. Mt. Vernon is a great city to raise your family, a great place to live, and a great place to visit. Mount Vernon is located on the Ohio River in the southwest corner of the state in Posey County.

The early settlers came to Mt.Vernon in 1805 and 1806 and called their settlement McFaddin's Bluff. The town began to thrive and in 1816 changed the name to Mt.Vernon, after George Washington's home. The town grew and prospered because of its strategic location on the Ohio River. Mt.Vernon was the home to Alvin P. Hovey, Indiana's 21st Governor, serving from 1889 to 1891.

Agriculture around Mt.Vernon, with its grain products and supporting businesses, has been the foundation of this city's existence and growth. Although, in recent years, through the industrialization of the Ohio River Valley, our area's interests and focus has also focused in additional directions.

Today, we are not only an agriculture community but we have industries that range from precision machined parts to nuclear components to high end polymers production. We are home to the Port of Indiana- Mt.Vernon, which is the eighth largest inland port in the country. Our port moves more cargo by water and rail than any other port in Indiana.

Mt.Vernon is located just 15 miles west of Evansville, home of the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville. Located 15 miles north of our city is the historic Town of New Harmony and Harmony State Park. We are located in the center of several metropolitan areas, travel time to St.Louis, MO is 2 ½ hrs , Nashville, TN is 3 hrs, Louisville, KY is 2 ½ hrs, and Indianapolis, IN is 3 1/2  hrs.
